Can we take you on a journey? Great! Let’s go someplace where we can all relax.. a place that is different from our homes and our daily lives. Before we pack our bags, and board our flights, let us have a look where we are actually going…
In the eastern part of the island of Bali, you will find a small boutique resort. Just off the main road, and after an extended driveway, you will find Alila Manggis. This resort, surrounded by an aura of tranquility, is the ideal place if you desire a getaway that gets your mind out of the hustle and bustle of any city, and any stress-inducing situation. So, let us trade our office desks and Xerox printers for a bit of nature, peace, and quiet.
Contemporary design
Alila translates to ‘Surprisingly different’, and is derived from Sanskrit, a language used in the Hindu religion that is widely practiced on the island. Alila is renowned for its contemporary and minimalistic design aesthetics whilst respecting the local culture and environment. This design is reflected in the buildings, the services offered, and human interaction. You will notice this directly upon entering the lobby, and experiencing your check-in.
With just over 50 rooms, this resort does not lose its serenity, while maintaining the ability to give you more than enough personalized service. Whether you prefer more modest-sized rooms with a garden terrace or a balcony, or a more spacious suite, the resort’s limited selection simplifies your challenge to choose a room that you are looking for.
Considering that Alila Manggis is an older property, built in 1994, and previously known as Balina Serai, the exterior has been well-maintained. You can tell that the property has character, and a rather pleasant one, if you ask us. Like a well-aged fine-wine, or the patina of a leather wallet, we liked that everything was maintained so well, like the resort has its own story to tell.
When we visited the property in 2019, the rooms still had its classic design. When you will visit the property, these rooms may have already undergone a renovation.
There is more than meets the eye
A quick Google search of Alila Manggis, and you cannot miss that the majority of images include the swimming pool. “Hmm.. a square swimming pool.. what is so special about that?” We had the same thought until we made use of it. Somehow, Alila is even reflected in there. It is something you will have to experience yourself to find out.
After a good night’s rest, it is time for breakfast. In our honest opinion, the most exciting meal of the day, no matter where we stay. The al-fresco restaurant is one amazing place to slowly wake-up after you have managed to crawl out of your bed in the morning. Waves crashing, water washing up on the beach, a light refreshing breeze, the perfect recipe to start your day. Forget the food, the elements of nature are all you need! Though there may be truth in this, we have certainly not lost our excitement over a good breakfast.
When it comes to the food selection, we found it to be limited. However, as we mentioned before, this absolutely helps making decisions easier. You do not want to start your day being unable to choose because the menu is the size of the Oxford dictionary.
Experience the local taste
Whether you start your day with coffee or tea, or maybe even a thirst-quenching juice, we always recommend everyone to try the local things. Instead of your usual americano, why not order a traditional Balinese coffee (Kopi Bali). And if you are really adventurous, try one of their jamu. “Uhmm.. Jamu?” Yeah! It is a traditional herbal drink in Indonesia. Different parts of Indonesia have different kinds of jamu. And since you are in Bali, why not try one from there? No matter your experience, you have tried something that the locals are proud of. Plus, you will have another story to tell your family and friends when you get back.
Hospitality is the human element
We have saved the best for last, in our opinion at least. What makes Alila Manggis the perfect candidate for a getaway, is the way that the staff interacts with its guests. During our stay, we really enjoyed our interactions with the staff. It was frequent enough to feel noticed and attended to as guests, yet not in an intrusive way. It felt balanced, and that makes all the difference when you are there for relaxation and to regain your Zen.
In summary, our experience with Alila Manggis has deserved this property our Editor’s Choice. For a 4-star property, they seem to have 5-star service levels. If you are looking for tranquility and are looking for an experience that you can write home about, we can recommend you try this hidden gem for yourself.
Lastly, if you have stayed with us so far, let us give you one last advice that may enhance your experience. Next to the restaurant, there is deck that is used for yoga sessions. If you have what it takes, get up right before sunrise, and just have a seat on the deck. You will be able to enjoy the most beautiful colors of twilight. Also, the world just feels different. Your senses, and especially your partner will thank you.
